Dear 2026,
Greetings from 2040. Things are going pretty well here. Artificial superintelligence (ASI) runs the world, cars fly, and technology has changed almost everything. Isn’t it funny that you thought Elon Musk was going to deliver the flying cars?
And yet, we need to talk about your spreadsheets.
I recently visited a business archive and found a file called FINAL_v7_REVISED_USE_THIS_ONE.xlsx. It contained 14 tabs, three versions of the same customer list, and a formula nobody had dared touch since 2017. Apparently, five people spent every Monday copying data between systems, checking numbers and emailing PDFs to someone who typed everything into another spreadsheet. You called this business as usual.
